Jazz Samba - Music of Stan Getz & Charlie Byrd

Thu 8th Feb | 7:30pm
Booking via Bonington Theatre Box Office

Mark Crooks (saxophone) Nigel Price (guitar) Demi Garcia (percussion) Marianne Windham (double bass).

A night of smooth Bossa Nova jazz music from the legendary Stan Getz / Charlie Byrd’ album 'Jazz Samba' recorded  in 1962. A huge commercial success, it topped the LP charts on its release and signaled the beginning of the bossa nova craze in America.  Notable tunes included the  hit  ‘Desafinado’ as well as 'One Note Samba', both composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Mark Crooks is a lyrical and passionate saxophonist in the Stan Getz mould. He has appeared at jazz clubs and festivals throughout Europe, and at the Lincoln Center in New York. He is a long-standing member of the John Wilson Orchestra with whom he plays at the BBC Proms each summer.

Guitarist Nigel Price is one of the unsung heroes of the British Jazz Scene with over 500 appearances at Ronnie Scott’s, 3 years with the James Taylor Quartet and  winner of the British Jazz Awards and Parliamentary Jazz Awards.  He is a firm favourite at Jazz Steps!

Jazz Samba is one of the classic LPs from the era and features in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die!

Bossa Nova is a relaxed style of samba developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where the word bossa is old-fashioned slang for something done with particular charm, natural flair or innate ability. (says Wikipedia).

Just come along and soak up the vibe!
