mjazz Launches Young Composer Commission 2026 — Now Open for Applications

Sat 29th Nov

mjazz has opened applications for its Young Composer Commission 2026, offering one early-career artist the chance to create a bold new work supported by a mentor of their choosing.

This is a rare invitation to step into your creative future with both freedom and support. The commissioned piece will be premiered as part of the mjazz programme — a space where regional voices collide with national attention — giving the selected composer a platform to shape something daring, personal, and resonant.

The opportunity includes:

£3,500 commission fee (inclusive of mentor support)

Freedom to choose your own mentor — composer, producer, performer, or creative leader

A public performance of your finished work within the mjazz programme

We’re seeking applications from composers aged up to 30 who are based in or strongly connected to the East Midlands. Your practice might sit in jazz, improvisation, electronics, experimental sound, cross-disciplinary forms — or a hybrid of these. What matters most is imagination, appetite, and the thrill of exploring ideas that don’t yet have a map.

What we want to hear from you

In up to 500 words, tell us:

The idea you want to explore

How you’ll approach creating the work

Who you’d like as a mentor and why

Your connection to the East Midlands

A short bio/CV, links to work if you have them

A simple project plan and budget

We welcome written, video, and audio submissions, and are committed to making the process accessible to all.

Why apply?

This commission is your chance to:

Develop your artistic voice in a supported, professional context

Shape a meaningful mentoring relationship

Have your work performed and celebrated

Take a defining step in your creative journey

Join the movement to build a bold, inclusive jazz ecosystem in the East Midlands

If you’re ready to stretch your imagination and carve out a space for your sound, we want to hear from you.
