Lucas Walters awarded mjazz Young Musician Commission

Wed 28th Jan

mjazz is delighted to announce that Lucas Walters has been awarded the mjazz Young Musician Commission, recognising outstanding emerging talent from across the East Midlands.

The commission will support Lucas to develop a new body of original work, providing time, space and professional backing to explore his artistic voice, collaborate with other musicians, and bring new music to audiences across the region. The project will culminate in a series of live performances, giving audiences the opportunity to experience the work as it develops and premieres.

Lucas was selected for the commission following a competitive process that highlighted both his musical skill and the clarity of his artistic vision. His work stood out for its ambition, curiosity and strong sense of direction, aligning closely with mjazz’s commitment to nurturing early-career artists and strengthening the regional jazz and improvised music ecosystem.

This commission forms part of mjazz’s wider programme to invest in talent development, create meaningful opportunities for emerging musicians, and ensure that new work can be made and shared locally. By backing artists at a pivotal stage in their careers, mjazz aims to build sustainable pathways for musicians to develop, present and tour new work.

The Young Musician Commission has been made possible thanks to funding from Arts Council England, supporting mjazz to continue its work developing talent and creating high-quality jazz and improvised music opportunities across the region.

Further details about the commissioned project, including performance dates, will be announced in due course.
