Jazz Masterclasses in Leicestershire schools

Workshops ("masterclasses") with national jazz artists/educators for school students. Organized in conjunction with Leicestershire Schools Music Service.

A project supported, funded and delivered by local education, EMJAZZ and Leicester Jazz House, with Arts Council England funding, and involving musical artists of wide renown.

Aim

To provide the opportunity for a group of up to approximately 12 students in (secondary) education, with some musical experience and competence, to engage actively in masterclasses led by acknowledged nationally recognized jazz artists/educators, and their bands, within a “workshop” environment in the school.

Organization

In partnership with the Leicestershire Schools Music Service (LSMS), on the basis of a co-ordinated approach to project delivery and 50:50 funding. Length of each workshop – 2 hours. The Masterclasses/ workshops for this pilot to be conducted by artists already booked by Leicester Jazzhouse for the Spring 2020 season, during the day before the evening performance.

The project had to be delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the pilot was finally realised on Thursday 26th May 2022 with a successful workshop (at Babington Academy, Leicester) by Trish Clowes and her quartet, with an evening performance at Attenborough Arts Centre.

We plan to continue to organize and deliver similar projects to schools in Leicestershire. Within the scope of such a longer term programme we would hope for an element of continuity, and also for wider promotion and recording for future learning.
